Recently at the West Point, Georgia manufacturing facility, Kia held quite the party in celebration of the production of its one millionth vehicle in the United States. A white 2014 Kia Sorento model in SXL trim rolled off assembly lines on July 12, followed by the cheers of surrounding Kia employees.
Further explaining the significance of this milestone, Byung Mo Ahn, Group President and CEO for Kia Motors America, states, "Building one million vehicles in less than four years is a tremendous achievement and one that each one of our more than 3,000 team members can take great pride in. People are the heart and soul of this company, and our team members' commitment to world class quality is one of the major driving forces behind Kia's unprecedented sales and market share growth in the U.S. over the last few years."1
Let's take a closer look at the history of Kia's U.S. production. In November of 2009, the Kia facility officially began manufacturing the Sorento after the factory underwent some massive growth. A $1 billion investment allowed for the addition of 11,000 more jobs in West Point, as well as for its local and on-site providers. The plant then expanded in 2012, boosting annual vehicle production to 360,000 units. Production of the Kia Optima, the automaker's best-selling vehicle for over a year now, was added in 2011.
